As 2024 winds down, I’m sure many of you are reflecting on the year that’s passed. It may have been a year full of growth and progress or a time of challenges that left you feeling lost or stuck. Wherever you are, there’s one thing we can all agree on: the close of the year is the perfect opportunity for renewal.
For many leaders, like those I work with, this past year has been about balancing a full professional life, managing stress, and often putting personal needs on the back burner. As 2025 approaches, you can reconnect with who you truly are and make this year one where you take action on the life you both deserve and have always desired.
Let this blog be an invitation to stop living on autopilot and start living in alignment with your true self.
Reviewing The Last Year
Before we leap into 2025, let’s take a moment to look back. Reflecting on the year isn’t about perfection or feeling like you didn’t do enough—it’s about acknowledging where you are and how far you’ve come. This introspective journey is a crucial part of your growth and development.
What did you accomplish this year?
Even if it didn’t feel like you were moving mountains, take a moment to celebrate what you’ve achieved. Perhaps it was making time for yourself when you’ve usually been too busy, reaching a milestone in your career, or simply getting through a challenging period. Each of these things deserves recognition. Let’s take a moment to feel proud of our accomplishments.
Where did you feel stuck or out of sync?
It’s also important to recognize where you felt disconnected or overwhelmed. Maybe you were constantly battling stress or burnout, or perhaps you weren’t able to prioritize your well-being. These moments, though challenging, are teaching moments. Identifying where you felt out of alignment will help guide you in the next chapter.
What have you learned?
Your experiences in 2024 likely taught you some valuable lessons. Some of these will be harder to look back on, but if we are to pivot and learn how to move forward, it is vital to look at what you have learned throughout the year. Take a moment to reflect on what you’ve learned, and let those insights empower your next steps.
Step into 2025: A Year of Action and Alignment
Stepping into 2025 means that it’s time to leave behind the year that was and step into the life you’ve always wanted. I’m talking about the kind of life that really reflects your values, desires, and purpose. It’s not about accomplishing more or checking off tasks—it’s about taking real steps toward building the life you truly want, one that brings you greater meaning and fulfillment. These steps could include setting aside time for a hobby you love, prioritizing self-care, or seeking professional help if needed.
So, how can we make that happen? Let’s dive into the steps.
Step 1: Reconnect with Your True Self
So often, we get caught up in who we think we should be rather than who we really are. When that happens, we can feel disconnected and out of touch with our deeper desires. But in 2025, it’s time to reconnect with the version of you waiting patiently underneath the surface. This could mean understanding your core values, acknowledging your strengths and weaknesses, and accepting your unique personality traits.
Reconnecting to yourself might also mean taking time for quiet reflection, journaling, or simply slowing down enough to connect to and listen to your heart. What lights you up? What do you truly value? What excites you? What makes your heart ‘sing’? Start there because everything else—your goals, your actions—needs to come from that place.
Step 2: Clarify What You Want
Clarity is the foundation for creating the life you desire. But sometimes, the busyness of life makes it hard to hear your inner voice. Please take some time to sit with your thoughts and dreams for 2025. This may require a day or two away from work and your life’s competing priorities to journal and consider what your true self desires rather than what others expect. What do YOU want your life to look like? What are YOUR deepest desires—not just in your career but in your personal relationships, overall well-being, and growth?
Don’t hold back in the process of dreaming. Give yourself permission to see and feel what your new life would look and feel like. Visualize your life as YOU want it, not as you think it should be. From there, break it down into actionable steps. These steps do not have to be complicated. They can include prioritizing time for yourself, focusing on some element of your well-being, or seeking support from a therapist or executive coach in the areas you feel most challenged.
Step 3: Make Wellness a Priority
Without our physical and mental health, nothing else can truly thrive. That’s why making your wellness non-negotiable in the upcoming year may be important. If you’re feeling burned or stressed, you’ve probably neglected your well-being. While you may feel less resistance to keep pushing through this year, it can be different. Prioritize your physical health, mental clarity, and emotional well-being.
Practices like mindfulness, grounding, and HeartBreath™ (which I often share with clients) can help you reduce stress, stay present, and reconnect with your true self. In my own burnout recovery, I learned that these practices are more than just about relaxation. They were an essential part of my wellness recovery process and, therefore, crucial in overcoming the challenges I faced in my career and personal life.
Step 4: Set Boundaries That Support You
Boundaries are essential for maintaining energy, focus, and physical and mental health. If you are anything like I was, you say “yes” to everything and everyone because you feel like you should. The issue is that when you take on too much, you can lose track of what really matters to you. Setting clear boundaries helps protect your time, allowing you to prioritize what aligns with your goals and values while also giving you the space to recharge and care for your well-being. By honoring these boundaries, you can maintain balance and ensure you’re giving your best to the things that matter most.
Consider this a 2025 challenge to you. Start saying “no” more often. Say “no” to commitments that drain your energy. Say “no” to overworking and underresting. Say “no” to people-pleasing behaviors that have you stretched too thin. Afraid of saying ‘no’ – then ask, ‘If I say ‘yes’ to this, then what am I saying ‘no’ to? By setting clear boundaries, you’ll free up the time and space to focus on what really matters to you.
Step 5: Take Action—But Start Small
The most critical step? Action. But action doesn’t mean you need to make giant leaps all at once. Start small. Whether committing to a new habit, joining a wellness retreat, or simply carving out time for yourself—take that first step. Momentum builds from there.
Don’t wait for the perfect time. The time is now. And if you’re ready to take action, why not start by joining a community of like-minded leaders who are also ready to take their wellness seriously?
